Organization Name: Charles Drew Health Center, Inc.
Mission: Charles Drew Health Center is committed to providing quality comprehensive health care in a manner that acknowledges the dignity of the individual, the strength of the family, and the supportive network of the community.
Funded Program Description: Thanks to The Kim Foundation, Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. (CDHC) was able to build a new group therapy room at CDHC’s newest location, CDHC at Omaha Home for Boys, 5190 Sprague Plaza. Construction was completed in February 2020.
CDHC had previously lacked space specifically designed for group therapy. Understanding that room layout can affect service user perceptions of psychological safety, intimacy, willingness to self-disclose, to build therapeutic rapport, and to feel a sense of agency, the space was designed for the specific purpose of providing much needed group therapy to underserved populations.
Successes of Program or Inspirational Stories: CDHC’s new group therapy room is now complete and ready for use, once social distancing restrictions allow for in-person group therapy to resume.
The project is part of the newly formed “Village Empowerment Center” on the campus of Omaha Home for Boys, developed by the Empowerment Network as a central place to access services related to employment, education, health, financial literacy, housing, entrepreneurship, food, art, STEM, and other specialized training and resources, including partners such as the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities, the Urban League, Family Housing Advisory Services, and Technology Omaha. In addition to providing a central community hub, the Village Empowerment Center also seeks to “bring the community to the campus” of Omaha Home for Boys, which serves more than 300 young men and women annually through four core programs: Inspiration Hill Residential Care, Jacobs’ Place Transitional Living, Branching Out Independent Living, and Clinical Services.
