
August 31 – R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Dr. Patricia Newman, CEO of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. (Relationship
Empowerment for Students, Parents, Educators and Community
Through Theater), a group dedicated to presenting plays at
schools and conferences to help youth understand and adjust to
the social issues students face in schools such as
bullying, dating violence, and anxiety, will discuss the mission
of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and also discuss the research and preparation
involved in developing and evaluating the performances.
September 7 – Nebraska Chapter of the American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Members of the
Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide
Prevention (AFSP), Joyce Hicks and Kendra McCallie, will share how the
AFSP works locally to educate and prevent suicide through research,
education, and awareness.
September 14 – Ticket to Work Program
Tom Gloss, program specialist for recruitment and outreach on the Ticket to Work, with CESSI, Division of Axiom and Sharon Johnson with the Department of Health and Human Service Long-Term Care Division, will discuss the
Ticket to Work Program and
how it benefits people with disabilities who are interested in going to
work. The Ticket Program is part of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives
Improvement Act of 1999 with the goal increasing opportunities and choices
for Social Security disability beneficiaries to obtain employment,
vocational rehabilitation (VR), and other support services from public and
private providers, employers, and other organizations.
September 21 – Physician Suicide
On the average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male
physicians in the United States than among other professionals, and 250
percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians. Every year, three to
four hundred physicians take their own lives — the equivalent of two to
three medical school classes. Dr. Blaine Shaffer with the Department of
Health and Human Services will join us to discuss this alarming trend.
September 28 – Respite Resource Center
Christine Stewart with the
Respite Resource Center (RRC), a
non-profit, state-funded agency offering information about respite services
across the lifespan, will share information about RRC’s services and
programs to provide caregivers an opportunity to have some time away from
their care giving duties in order to take care of themselves.
October 5 – Nebraska RentWise
Roni Wilder with
Nebraska RentWise joins Not Alone to share
information about RentWise, a tenant education program that helps people
find and keep decent, safe, affordable rental housing that meets their
needs.
