The month of May recognizes National Foster Care Month, so we've asked Jaimie Anderson Hoyt and Jewel Schiffens from Nebraska Families Collaborative (NFC) to help us understand the role of foster parents, the value of their services, and the needs being addressed when youngsters are placed in the foster care system. NFC is a collaboration of five organizations invested in children and families, and, as a collaborative, directs the foster care placement for most youngsters in this area.

Treva Haugaard, the Executive Director of GOALS, will join us to talk about their mission of addressing absenteeism and at-risk behavior in youth by finding coordinated efforts of encouragement and support that will keep youngsters successfully in school. In 2009, the legislature established a new law regarding truancy in Nebraska and GOALS is part of the plan the public school superintendents in Douglas and Sarpy Counties outlined for responding to students who are not consistently attending school.

Mary Ellen Copeland is the leader, the name and the authority in Wellness Recovery Action Plans, or WRAP. Every person with a mental health challenge should have a WRAP, which is a step-by-step plan for maintaining wellness, or a definite, written list of day-to-day coping strategies. WRAPs have been developed for teens, young adults, members of the military, and anyone else who is working to maintain recovery and resiliency.

Paolo del Vecchio, acting Director for the Center for Mental Health Services, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), heads the lead federal agency designed to reduce the impact of mental illness and substance abuse on America's communities. Paolo promotes opportunities for healing and stresses the need to develop the strength and resiliency to overcome the effects of psychological disorders. He has been internationally acclaimed for his leadership in peer support and peer leadership programs, and will talk with Not Alone listeners about new professions emerging in these fields. He also has very strong feelings about recovery and the role of each individual in promoting their own recovery opportunities. He will be a featured keynote speaker at the 2012 Nebraska Statewide Behavioral Health Conference in Lincoln scheduled for May 21 – 23.

May 1, 2012 – Timothy’s Law
Access to mental health services remains unequal and discriminatory. Because he suffered a psychological illness, 12-year-old Timothy was denied full coverage under his father's employee benefit plan. This discrimination against mental illness ended in Timothy’s death at age 12 by suicide. Because of Timothy's death, the leadership of his parents, and other families who had suffered similar loss, New York became one of the first states requiring equal coverage between mental and physical illnesses in regard to employer group benefit plans.

April 17, 2012 – Crisis Intervention Training for Law Enforcement
Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for law enforcement began in Omaha in 2006 and has continued to expand through the years. Currently, there are two graduating classes each calendar year. The training is designed to enhance law enforcement’s response toward individuals who are experiencing mental health issues. It helps them recognize common forms of mental illness and also teaches them to utilize the most effective means of communicating with people experiencing a crisis.

Author Leslie Byers chronicles years of frustration experienced as she and her husband struggled to find answers to their daughter’s manic-induced rages and suicidal depressions brought on by bipolar disorder in her book “Heather’s Rage: A Mother’s Faith Reflected in Her Daughter’s Mental Illness”. The book illustrates the family’s challenges working with the educational system, dealing with the juvenile court system, and coping with being forced to give up custody of Heather because they could not afford the proper treatment. Professor Christiana Bratiotis is one of the leading researchers in the field of hoarding. She will be talking with us about how symptoms of hoarding are first seen in ages 12 to 20. Two of the most common culprits we will learn about are anxiety and stress. About 6 percent of our population suffers from hoarding, approximately 16 million people. Life experiences of loss - a loved one, a job, or a home - can be triggers, as is a genetic disposition. Sometimes, it is simply too overwhelming to make a decision about what to do with items so nothing is done. May 24, 2011 – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Veterans
Fr. Rick Curry, SJ, was a recent guest at Creighton University's Cardoner at Creighton series. Fr. Curry spent many years working with the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped, and has recently begun working with returning wounded veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq to begin a writers program so they could tell their own stories. He helps coach the veterans as they write their monologues, while assessing their psychological needs resulting from military service. Fr. Curry also works with PTSD in the military, particularly addressing the needs of the military chaplains in addressing spiritual needs.

Youth Emergency Services (YES) was established to help homeless and at-risk youth learn to become self-sufficient young adults. They are able to receive food and shelter on an emergency basis, sometimes medical care is involved. Often they need to be directed to safer support systems so that they are able to enter the world of adulthood more safely, and with more stability. We'll learn why there are so many more homeless youth these days and the role YES plays in reversing the hazardous circumstances in which youth find themselves.

Week of August 6, 2012 – Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
Cheryl McNeil, professor at West Virginia University, and Beth Troutman, professor at the University of Iowa tells us that 26 percent of US children experience a traumatic event before age 4. PCIT is a nationally recognized practice model designed for children ages 2 to 7 years of age with disruptive behavior disorders often triggered by traumatic events. Therapists work closely with parents helping them learn to modify their child's behavior, while concurrently strengthening their relationship.

On any given day in Nebraska, more than 800 children in the foster care system are waiting for adoptive families. Foster care is a safety service for children when they are unable to remain safely at home. Dr. Dave Miers with BryanLGH in Lincoln, and Dr. Don Belau with the YRTC in Geneva, will also join the program to talk about the LOSS teams developed in the Lancaster County area. We will learn that surviving family or friends who are reached through a LOSS Team receive help with the grief process within a month, while in other families not helped by a LOSS Team, it is usually nearly five years before the family problems become such that help is sought. Dr. Campbell will be the keynote speaker at the National LOSS Conference in Lincoln May 19-21.

On average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male physicians in the United States than among other professionals, and 250 percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians. Every year, three to four hundred physicians take their own lives — the equivalent of two to three medical school classes. Cheryl McNeil, professor at West Virginia University, and Beth Troutman, professor at the University of Iowa tells us that 26 percent of US children experience a traumatic event before age 4. PCIT is a nationally recognized practice model designed for children ages 2 to 7 years of age with disruptive behavior disorders often triggered by traumatic events. Therapists work closely with parents helping them learn to modify their child's behavior, while concurrently strengthening their relationship.

Youth Emergency Services (YES) was established to help homeless and at-risk youth learn to become self-sufficient young adults. On average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male physicians in the United States than among other professionals, and 250 percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians. Every year, three to four hundred physicians take their own lives — the equivalent of two to three medical school classes. PANDAS is the acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. It is believed that sometimes a strep infection may be the root cause of some mental health diagnosis in children. Some children with PANDAS are initially diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or a tic disorder. It is thought to be the body's immune reaction to infection, not the Strep infection itself that causes symptoms.

Christmas shopping has begun, and this can be a joyous experience, unless, of course, you have problems with shoplifting. Some people, because of their affliction, must be content to shop online, or order through a catalogue, or have somebody else do their shopping. Many people, in order to minimize temptation, even depend upon others to do all the grocery shopping. What causes this need to shoplift, and what can be done to curb this behavior? Since there are more than 7000 shoplifting arrests in Douglas County per year, and those who shoplift report they steal 48 times for every one time they are caught, we've invited friends from Compulsive Shoplifters Anonymous to be our guests and to help us find answers to these questions.

One brain disease that is very complicated and often misunderstood is Borderline Personality Disorder. NAMI describes this as a 'pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. It is a disorder of emotional dysregulation.' On any given day in Nebraska, more than 800 children in the foster care system are waiting for adoptive families. Foster care is a safety service for children when they are unable to remain safely at home. On average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male physicians in the United States than among other professionals, and 250 percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians. Every year, three to four hundred physicians take their own lives — the equivalent of two to three medical school classes. The holistic approach to caring for veterans through unique programs such as extended care and rehabilitation programs, medical foster homes, home-based primary care, and patient aligned care teams are meeting with greater and greater success. The VA in Nebraska and western Iowa is working to be more responsive not only to the needs of older veterans, but to the unique and special needs of today's wounded warriors. Dr. Frank Campbell, the founder of the Local Outreach to Survivors of Suicide, will be our guest on Not Alone to talk about LOSS teams developed across the nation. Dr. Dave Miers with BryanLGH in Lincoln, and Dr. Don Belau with the YRTC in Geneva, will also join the program to talk about the LOSS teams developed in the Lancaster County area. We will learn that surviving family or friends who are reached through a LOSS Team receive help with the grief process within a month, while in other families not helped by a LOSS Team, it is usually nearly five years before the family problems become such that help is sought. Dr. Campbell will be the keynote speaker at the National LOSS Conference in Lincoln May 19-21.

Fresh Hope is an Omaha Christian support group for those who suffer from mood disorders and those who love them. Members encourage one another as equals, both in small groups and while sharing their journeys within the larger group. Recognizing the need for accountability and encouragement, Fresh Hope members focus on just that, providing hope along the road to wellness. On any given day in Nebraska, more than 800 children in the foster care system are waiting for adoptive families. Foster care is a safety service for children when they are unable to remain safely at home. When it is not possible to get the family back together, the goal becomes finding a permanent family that will become the child’s parents. Not Alone's guests will be peer support workers with Community Alliance, The Salvation Army, Douglas County Mental Health Center, and Region 6. To be trained as a Peer Specialist, a person must have achieved success in managing their own mental illness. Peers have a unique insight into mental illness and what makes recovery possible, and are proven leaders in encouraging, supporting, comforting, and inspiring others to achieve those same victories. February 12, 2013 – At Ease
At Ease is a program designed for military families, veterans or active duty personnel. It offers trauma treatment and therapeutic support programs especially addressing the untreated trauma reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is a confidential service available to families outside of their usual military programs, so the course of treatment for individuals or family members remains outside the military record. In Nebraska, Lutheran Family Services helps to bridge that gap for servicemen and women.

January 15, 2013 – WRAP
Not Alone listeners are familiar with WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plans). This week's guests are Walter Hudson and Jayne Winterling who teach a specially written and developed WRAP for Veterans. There are about 840,000 veterans who are homeless at some time during the year, which is 23 percent of the homeless population. 89 percent received Honorable Discharges, while 33 percent served in a war zone, and suicide has become a major health problem among veterans. WRAP is designed to give our veterans the help and encouragement they need by helping them design and implement a plan for healthy living, and to teach family members how these resources will work.

Continuing with our appreciation of our veterans, and recognizing those who bring our military families hope and healing, this day's program will introduce the role of the military chaplains working with full-time active duty service men and women as well as for those who are with Reserve Units and those in the National Guard. Recognizing that we have lost more Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to suicide than to combat injuries, the Chaplains also play a huge role in comforting and encouraging veterans and families with emotional wounds.

November 15, 2011 – Independence Center at BryanLGH Medical Center
The Independence Center at BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln, Neb. was developed to help individuals and their families begin and maintain their recovery from the effects of alcohol and other drug abuse or dependence. Alcohol and other drug dependency may accentuate symptoms of other problems, but it is also a disease entity in itself, and as the illness progresses, relationships, work, mental health, physical health, and spiritual well-being are affected. The services offered by The Independence Center have so successfully helped clients change their lives for the better, that many local military entities, such as Ft. Riley in Kansas, and Offutt AFB in Nebraska are using these services.

November 8, 2011 – Veteran Support Programs
The holistic approach to caring for veterans through unique programs such as extended care and rehabilitation programs, medical foster homes, home-based primary care, and patient aligned care teams are meeting with greater and greater success. The VA in Nebraska and western Iowa is working to be more responsive not only to the needs of older veterans, but to the unique and special needs of today's wounded warriors. Recognizing that many of today's wounds are psychological rather than physical, new approaches and therapies are being developed and put into place so that our service men and women, and their loved ones, can receive the healing care that is needed.

November 1, 2011 – Veteran Caregiver Support Programs
The VA has developed programs to assist families and caregivers who are instrumental in helping veterans. Caregiver support programs provide training and other support needs to help caregivers who are dedicating their lives to caring for veterans who often cannot help themselves. This includes PTSD orientation for families of vets entering treatment. The purpose is to give family members the tools they need in order to help their loved one through treatment.

May 24, 2011 – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Veterans
Fr. Rick Curry, SJ, was a recent guest at Creighton University's Cardoner at Creighton series. Fr. Curry spent many years working with the National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped, and has recently begun working with returning wounded veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq to begin a writers program so they could tell their own stories. He helps coach the veterans as they write their monologues, while assessing their psychological needs resulting from military service. Fr. Curry also works with PTSD in the military, particularly addressing the needs of the military chaplains in addressing spiritual needs.

As of 2009, more than 280,000 women served in the military on active duty or in the National Guard or Reserves, which represents approximately 15% of all active duty soldiers. Members of the Veterans Affairs will join Not Alone to highlight some of the special concerns affecting women in the military including returning to the role of wife and mother after deployment and personal health issues such as the effects of post traumatic stress disorder and sexual trauma on women soldiers.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy that is proving to be an effective treatment for disorders such as depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain.
