To be trained as a Peer Specialist, a person must have achieved success in managing their own mental illness. November 9, 2010 – Women in the Military
As of 2009, more than 280,000 women served in the military on active duty or in the National Guard or Reserves, which represents approximately 15% of all active duty soldiers. Members of the Veterans Affairs will join Not Alone to highlight some of the special concerns affecting women in the military including returning to the role of wife and mother after deployment and personal health issues such as the effects of post traumatic stress disorder and sexual trauma on women soldiers.

Tom Gloss with CESSI, Division of Axiom, is program specialist for recruitment and outreach for the Ticket to Work program, together with Sharon Johnson with the Department of Health and Human Services Long-Term Care Division, will discuss the Ticket to Work Program and how it benefits people with disabilities who are interested in going to work. The Ticket Program is part of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 with the goal of increasing opportunities and choices for Social Security disability beneficiaries to obtain employment, vocational rehabilitation (VR), and other support services from public and private providers, employers, and other organizations.

September 21, 2010 – Physician Suicide
On average, death by suicide is about 70 percent more likely among male physicians in the United States than among other professionals, and 250 percent to 400 percent higher among female physicians. Every year, three to four hundred physicians take their own lives — the equivalent of two to three medical school classes. Dr. Blaine Shaffer with the Department of Health and Human Services will join Not Alone to discuss how stigma regarding loss of professional and personal stature often prevents physicians from seeking the mental health care they need.
