Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Summit

The Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Summit will be held Friday, January 29, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (CST).

This community event will provide an overview of suicide as a public health concern in Nebraska; present opportunities to discuss local needs related to suicide prevention; and will feature an introduction to proven suicide prevention practices (sometimes referred to as evidence-informed or best practices). An informational session will also be provided about forthcoming youth suicide prevention grants that will be available in 2010 to community groups and organizations across the state.

The schedule for the Summit will include:

  • Keynote Remarks: Tom Osborne, NU Athletic Director
  • Statewide inventory of suicide prevention practices: Don Belau, Dave Miers, and Peg Prusa-Ogea, Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition
  • Small group discussions and report back period on community suicide prevention activities and needs
  • Introduction to evidence-based, best practices to prevent suicide: Elana Premack-Sandler, Suicide Prevention Resource Center
  • Depression and suicide within the military and veteran community
  • Technical assistance to apply for forthcoming suicide prevention seed grants: Denise Bulling, University of Nebraska & Marilyn Mecham, Interfaith Ministries of Nebraska

The Summit will originate in Lincoln, NE at the BryanLGH West Conference Center. It will be videocast to sites across the state via the Nebraska Statewide Telehealth Network. Participants at the Lincoln site will be provided with lunch. The intended audience includes community members, professionals, suicide survivors, and/or youth and adults interested in learning more about suicide prevention, and promoting evidence-based suicide prevention activities in their communities.

Participating sites include: Lincoln, Aurora, Bassett, Columbus, Crete, Falls City, Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, Norfolk, Omaha, Saunders County, Superior, and York.
