Individuals from across the state of Nebraska have collaborated
efforts to build upon and enhance the response to children’s
mental health and substance abuse. Recognizing the need to effectively
communicate the urgency that exists for far too many families who
cannot access vitally necessary services for their child, the group
focuses on increased coordination and development of infrastructure
at the state, regional, and local levels.
In October of 2004 Nebraska HHSS received funding to develop a state
wide Children’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse delivery
system. This is a 5-year grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health
Service Administration providing $750,000 of funding per year.
A Statewide Steering Committee oversees the work of the grant, with
three subcommittees consisting of, Early Childhood, Youth, and Evaluation/Academics.
State and private agencies, mental health and substance abuse providers,
youth consumers, family members and other identified professionals
are represented through the steering committee.
The grant focuses on children age birth to five, youth, youth with
co-occurring disorders, substance abuse and transition age youth.
Key areas of focus include:
- Coordination across agencies;
- Family centered approaches across systems;
- Coordinated service plans;
- Single point of accountability;
