Ted E. Bear Hollow invites you to attend Understanding and Supporting
Children and Families After a Suicide Death presented by Donna Schuurman,
Ed. D., F.T.
Dr. Donna Schuurman is Executive Director of The Dougy Center for
Grieving Children & Families, where she has served in various roles
since 1986. She has written and trained internationally on children’s
bereavement issues, and is the author of Never the Same: Coming to
Terms with the Death of a Parent.
OBJECTIVES:
- Understand how children and teens ‘make sense’ of suicide
developmentally, socially, and intellectually in order to better
address their needs
- Develop a deeper understanding of what unique needs children and
teens have following a suicide death
- Explore how the language we use around suicide contributes to
stigma or conversely, supports the griever
- Provide tools for increased services to suicide bereaved
children and families including listening skills

Youth and Teen Health Summit
Friday, November 4 & Saturday, November 5, 2011
The Youth and Teen Health Summit is a two-day summit that will be
held in Kansas City, Missouri created for adolescents aged 9 – 18 years
old and parents/guardians. Adolescents and their parents will receive
information on six targeted skill development and health topic areas.
Participating youth and teens will commit to conducting three activities
over the next year educating their peers about information learned
during the Summit. Registered participants should expect to attend both
Friday and Saturday.

At the conclusion of the presentation the participant will be able to:
- Identify alterations in brain function that are associated with
dementia.
- Describe common behavioral symptoms related to cognitive changes
that increase the risk of abuse or neglect.
- Discuss strategies to prevent abuse or neglect when a person has
dementia.
Target Audience: Nurses, social workers, family members, caregivers,
facility administrators, members of Dundee Presbyterian Church, other
interested healthcare professionals, and care staff members. CEUs are
available.

Nebraska Women’s Health Symposium

The Nebraska Women’s Health Symposium will be held on November 9 at
the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel in Lincoln. The Symposium brings together
health care professionals from across the state who share an interest in
current women’s health care trends, education, prevention services, and
networking.
Diverse topics that include behavioral health, wellness, health care
needs of female veterans, advances in stress management, dementia,
tobacco cessation, and complementary medicine are presented in a relaxed
learning environment. Participants enjoy connecting with colleagues,
physical activity breaks, interesting exhibits and outstanding
presentations. One of the featured speakers is Dr. Joann Schaefer, Chief
Medical Officer and Director of the Division of Public Health.
Continuing education credits are provided for nursing, as well as CMEs
for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and
pharmacists. Application has been made for continuing education credit
for registered dietitians and dietetic technicians. Social workers will
receive a certificate of attendance to submit for credit to their Board.
