Please join us on September 8, 2010 as Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman declares Sept. 5 – 11, 2010 Suicide Prevention Awareness Week in Nebraska. Governor Heineman will make his proclamation at the Capital Building at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 8.

Out of the Darkness Walk - Omaha

Omaha’s 6th OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK will be held on Sunday afternoon, September 12, 2010 at Miller’s Landing Park from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are a primary fundraising event for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). AFSP uses half of the funds raised for research grants all over the world and to develop suicide prevention programs. Our own AFSP Nebraska Chapter receives the other half of the funds raised for use locally in AFSP approved programs.

Stephen Center Hare and Hound Pleasure Ride Fundraiser

The Stephen Center is hosting the Hare and Hound Pleasure Ride Fundraiser.

Sunday, Sept. 12
Registration: 8:30 a.m.
Ride: 9:45 a.m.
Cost: $25 donation
Location: begins and ends at Stephen Center (2723 Q. Street, Omaha, NE)

The ride will last approximately 1.5 hours and 65 miles. Map and questionnaire will be provided, so bring your observation skills and/or partner. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the ride. Will also be offering tours of the Stephen Center HERO Program and Emergency Shelter.

Motorcycle parking available in front of the HERO building at 5217 S. 28th and in the parking lot behind the Emergency Shelter.

Network of Care Training

Nebraska HHS has contracted with NAMI Nebraska to provide information on the Nebraska Network of Care to consumers/families/residents across the state.

If you are interested in learning more about the Network of Care (NOC) and are willing to teach others across your area the benefits of NOC (stipend will be provided for teaching others), please complete the application and return to Jonah Deppe at jdeppe@nami.org or fax to 402-346-4070 no later than noon on September 10, 2010.

Alliance, Neb. will host an Out of the Darkness Community Walks on Saturday, September 18 at Laing Lake from 10 a.m. to noon. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The Out of the Darkness Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in over 200 communities across the country this fall, with the proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

St. Monica’s Amazing Chase V

St. Monica’s Amazing Chase is a fundraiser unlike any other. Team of four will navigate challenges and overcome obstacles to find and cross the finish line first. The event is designed to remind us all that the path to recovery from substance abuse is never a straight line. There are twists and turns and unexpected obstacles along the way.

Registration is $50 per player and open to the first 30 teams!

St. Monica's addresses the root causes of substance abuse in women. Our program helps families overcome mental health and chemical dependency while learning the skills they will need to maintain their sobriety and build a strong family support system.
