Iowa center proposed to help those with mental illness

From a story in the December 29, 2005 edition of the Omaha World-Herald:

Council Bluffs – Those with depression, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses in Pottawattamie County may have a place to go next year to get support in dealing with their illnesses.

The county will consider leasing 900 square feet at 500 East Broadway for a recovery center. Suzanne Watson, the county’s director of community services, said those with mental illnesses could meet at the center to discuss various matters, such as staying on medication or getting a job.

The center would have reading materials on recovery, a television with basic cable, a computer with Internet access and a telephone for local calls. The users could raise funds or seek donations for other items, such as games, she said.

The key is to provide a comfortable, nonclinic atmosphere where people can interact, Watson said. One of the goals is to decrease the number of times that patients need to be hospitalized. The proposed center would be controlled by the users, she said, including hours of operation. The recovery center will be open to anyone in the community with mental health problems.

Watson said she will meet with the County Attorney’s Office to go over details for the center. She will come back to the board with a final plan next month.
