October 2006 - While training for In
Our Own Voice – Living with Mental Illness has
been held annually, NAMI Nebraska hopes to conduct them more
often in the future. As part of the training, participants
from across the state of Nebraska write their stories about
illness and recovery with training focused on how to address
a variety of audiences.
Too often the general public, professionals,
families, and friends lose hope that recovery is possible.
Many concerned people have never been exposed to recovery
wellness. Presenters put a face to the experience of improved
health and well-being. The purpose of the presentations is
to fight the stigma of mental illness, educate the public
about recovery, and encourage further research about mental
illness. Each participant learned and practiced their “stories”
which are divided in six parts: Introduction, Dark Days, Acceptance,
Treatment, Coping Skills, and Success, Hope and Dreams.
A typical presentation consists of individuals
telling their “story”. After each section there
is time for interaction with the audience. In Our Own
Voice – Living with Mental Illness can be presented
to organizations, schools, and community meeting of various
types.
You may inquire about, and plan for, a presentation
in your location by contacting the state In Our Own Voice
coordinator, Richard Ellis at 402-304-6413.
