| The
Kim Foundation was pleased to read an article in the June
09, 2003, edition of the Lincoln Journal Star
stating that Gov. Mike Johanns’ Top Issue for the
remainder of his term of office is Mental Health.
The Governor, according to the article
by Nancy Hicks, is pleased that new drug therapies offer
greater hope to people with mental illness, and he is
concerned about the problems parents face in getting
adequate treatment for children. Gov. Johanns also mentioned
the opportunity for better treatment when people are
diagnosed earlier.
Governor Johanns also spoke of the
fragmented delivery of mental health services in Nebraska,
which has also become one of the concerns of the Kim
Foundation.
Quoting from the article, Gov. Johanns said “And
the other thing I would do, I would try to change

people’s
perception that there is somehow a weakness in people
with mental illness. These people are fighting the greatest
battle that you can possibly imagine. Some are fighting
just to make it through the day.”
“But one thing I know. With
good science and good care, there is recovery.”
The Kim Foundation appreciates the
interest and leadership that Governor Johanns has given
to mental health issues. This is an opportunity to work
cooperatively with the encouragement and support of
our elected officials, our community leaders, the healthcare
providers, and the community we serve, to make a difference
in the lives of those families affected by mental health
issues.
We would suggest that others communicate
with the Governor’s office to express
their support and encouragement for his Leadership in
the field of Behavioral Health. |
