People who suffer mental illness or substance abuse are not
statistics or budgetary issues. They are our family members,
friends, loved ones.
They are deserving of the same fair and
humane treatment as any other Nebraska citizen. Denying these
individuals the ability to live their lives with family and
community support, and denying them access to the best care
options, is wrong.
The majority of people with mental illness
can be rehabilitated and live in home communities. In fact,
communities-based services provide access to mental health
care for more people. The most successful treatments for the
past 30 years have been based upon educating patients and
families about the illness and providing strong, local, accessible
continuums of care.
It's time for Nebraskans to do the right
thing.
