Two
major issues in the field of behavioral health that often must be
addressed simultaneously are substance abuse and
mental illness. According to Dr. Dan Wilson, chairman
of psychiatry at Creighton University School of Medicine, between
70 and 80 percent of the people who suffer severe mental illness
are simultaneously addicted to drugs or alcohol, usually resulting
from attempts to ‘self-medicate.
Recognizing these problems, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA) is offering state incentive grants
for the treatment of persons with co-occurring substance related
and mental disorders. The purpose is to assist the state's abilities
to provide treatment services to persons with substance abuse and
mental health disorders, and their families.
