Not Alone Radio Program, October 2: National Depression Screening Day

Our guests today, Dr. Steve Wengel, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Dr. Dave Miers, Manager of Mental Health Services at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, talked about National Depression Screening observance to be held nationwide on October 11, 2012, as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week. Depression Screening Day is an annual event created to call attention to the illness of depression, remind us of the signs and symptoms, to educate Not Alone listeners about treatment options, and to help people connect to appropriate treatment providers.

The September 27 broadcast of Not Alone focused on depression; severe depression that seems to overwhelm life, and robs people of hope. Dr. Miers and Dr. Belau reminded us that depression affects each person differently, and asked us to take stock of our own feelings, or maybe become more aware of the needs of those around us.
