About 13 of every 100 youth between ages 9 and 17 experience some kind of anxiety disorder, some more than one. To some people these fears may seem silly, or out of proportion, but to the person experiencing them those fears and worries are very real, very consuming and immobilizing. Coping with such a heavy load takes its toll on a young person; some fear going to school because of what could happen at home while they are away. They are sometimes anxious about a family member or a pet. Others fear leaving the house and attending school because of bullying, or extreme lack of confidence in school performance.
In honor of Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month in September, Not Alone spoke with Joyce Hicks, and Kendra McCallie, representing the Nebraska Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on Tuesday, September 7. We discussed the programs and events sponsored by AFSP to raise awareness for suicide prevention and to share facts on this troubling issue.
