Our August 2 program welcomed friends from the Behaven Day Center. Boy, was it fun to be transported back into the mind and behaviors of a child for just a little while. Being a little kid can be lots of fun: moments filled with energy, excitement, creativity, and wonder!
But what about the little ones who are psychologically vulnerable, or who have behaviors that are challenging for parents and day care providers to successfully manage?
Training ourselves in new ways of thinking can reverse feelings of helplessness and hopelessness often experienced by people with chemical imbalances in the brain. Everyone can suffer depression at times, and again, being able to refocus our thinking can help make meaningful life changes.
Today we learned of the significant relationship between adverse childhood experiences and the physical and emotional ills of adulthood. Secure infants learn to trust both what they feel and how they understand the world. When caregivers are the source of their infant’s distress, children experience excessive anger, anxiety, and longing to be taken care of, and children later see life as futile. Helping young children and their parents manage difficulties early in life may prevent the development of many physical and emotional disorders.
In October of 2010, Not Alone did a program about RentWise in Nebraska. Our guests were outstanding, and the information they presented was so meaningful that we were delighted by the numbers of people who asked for the broadcast repeated; on March 29, it was our privilege to do so.
