Not Alone Radio Program, Mar. 20: Catholic Charities Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

The spring season is a time of hope and renewal and it sparks interest in trying once again to change habits of addiction. We asked friends from Catholic Charities to join us and talk about opportunities and options for successful treatment. Mike Phillips, Director of Campus for Hope, shared that many times clients do arrive at their absolute worst, unable to see anything positive or sustaining about their life; they are frequently beyond caring. The mission of Campus for Hope is to help clients find their spirit’s resiliency, to see the good, the worth, the valuable treasure within themselves, and then help them develop the tools and skills needed to maintain a lifetime of safety and sobriety. It is not an easy process, and needs to be taken one step at a time, but life can and does change for the better.

Not Alone Radio Program, Mar. 13: Social Work Students

It is always a positive when we interview students. They are excited about their career choice and eager to graduate and begin work. Their enthusiasm and belief in the future is contagious and heart-warming. Our guests on Not Alone, Zaki Phillips, a graduate student at UNO School of Social Work, and Nathan Howland, an undergrad at UNO created just that atmosphere.

Not Alone Radio Program, Mar. 6: Brain Injury Association of Nebraska

Not Alone listeners had the opportunity to learn about traumatic brain injuries this week from Kate Jarecke, Anne Hupka, and Peggy Reisher representing the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska. We hadn’t realized that 36,000 Nebraskans currently have a brain injury!

Not Alone Radio Program, Feb. 28: Voices for Children

Thanks to Carolyn Rooker, CEO of Voices for Children and Caitlin Pardue, Policy Associate for Behavioral Health with Voices for Children for joining Not Alone this week. Voices for Children is celebrating its 25th year as advocates for children, particularly children in need of behavioral health care.

Not Alone Radio Program, Feb. 21: R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

It is always such fun to have the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. professional theater group join Not Alone. They have such enthusiasm as well as a sincere commitment to helping young people move toward a healthier and happier life.

Siena/Francis House Breaks Ground, Builds Brighter Tomorrows

Congratulations to Siena/Francis House for another spectacular ground breaking ceremony. Although they did pick one of the coldest, most blustery days for the outdoor ceremony, hearts and spirits were warm as preparations were made for construction of a new permanent supportive housing apartment. The building will hold 48 efficiency apartments, each housing homeless men and women who have a disabling condition. Each unit rents for $250 a month, including utilities.

Not Alone Radio Program, Feb 14: Moe Armstrong

Our broadcast with Moe Armstrong was a celebration of hope and recovery in respect to the challenges with behaviors and thoughts that diseases of the brain can instill. Moe was like many young men, full of strength, ambition and self-confidence. His experiences as a Marine medical corpsman during the Vietnam conflict were traumatic, leading to lost years which included homelessness, addictions, illness, and hopelessness.

Not Alone Radio Program, Feb. 7: Dr. Alan Wolfelt

Dr. Alan Wolfelt was such a kind and compassionate guest this week; his message regarding grief and mourning came straight from the heart. Dr. Wolfelt shared how people in other countries often perceive the folks in the U.S. as hard-hearted because we don’t take time to mourn our loss. We are supposed to “put the past in the past”, or “get over it and move forward.” We do this by removing the pictures and reminders of those lost, never speaking again about the one we loved, and getting back to normal routines as quickly as possible! Other countries think it is normal to have a period of grieving, and to share our loss with friends, neighbors, and even strangers in order to help those grieving recognize and share the burden of sorrow.

Not Alone Radio Program, Jan. 31: PANDAS

PANDAS — not the bears — the pediatric illness Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, was the subject of Not Alone this week. These illnesses are believed to be triggered by strep infections that some children have periodically. Parents may not even realize their child had ‘strep throat’, for example, until dramatic behavioral changes, such as tics, obsessions, compulsions, rages, and separation disorders become evident.

Not Alone Radio Program, Jan. 24: Fresh Hope

Because the unexpected happened, as it does once in a while, we found ourselves needing to postpone our planned broadcast with our friends from the Initial Response Unit (IRU), and re-broadcast a program with the Fresh Hope Support group in Elkhorn. The listener response to the original broadcast was overwhelming; listeners commented that this support group really gave them hope, and the courage to join a support program.
