As I dropped my daughter off for the first day of her junior year, I was hit with a wave of panic – “I can’t believe summer is already over!” Followed by an immediate, “Oh my gosh! My baby is an upper classman (woman)!” The older she gets, the faster I think time is going. Or maybe it’s the older I get? Either way; time is flying by! So with that I hope the process of back to school, no matter what that looks like for you, wasn’t too chaotic! For The Kim Foundation, back to school season has meant numerous suicide prevention and mental health awareness trainings spanning from Greeley, CO to right here in Omaha.

Celebrity Suicide and the Media

The music world was reeling after the shocking death of Linkin Park front man, Chester Bennington, in late July. Bennington was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home where the coroners later ruled his death a suicide. His passing occurred on the birthday of his late friend, Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Sound Garden, who also died by suicide this past May (3). Both musicians’ deaths were heavily covered by media outlets around the world, many of which ignored the best practices for responsible suicide reporting.

National Association of Case Management (NACM)

On October 24-26, 2017 in downtown Omaha, NE, NACM will host its 23rd Annual Case Management Conference, Promoting the Profession of Case Management: Ethics, Excellence, and Ethos. This three-day conference, co-sponsored by Region V Systems and the Mental Health Association of Nebraska, has nationally known keynote speakers, 16 specialty tracks with over 50 workshops to choose from, and a new CM Camp where attendee interaction, discussion, and relationship-building will take center stage. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about multiple program models, best practices, and nationwide resources.

Organization Name: OneWorld Community Health Centers, Inc.

Mission: OneWorld Community Health Centers, Inc., in partnership with the community, provides culturally respectful, quality healthcare with special attention to the underserved.

Funded Program Description: OneWorld provides mental health care to children and young adults including many Spanish-speaking children from immigrant families who find themselves adjusting to a new city and a different culture without friends, extended family, or social support. OneWorld clinicians are trusted providers of medical care to this population.
